Euro research project to push OLED technology 22/10/2008

organic light emitting diode display, OLED An integrated research project is bringing together a consortium of industry and academic experts to accelerate the development of organic light emitting diode (OLED) technologies in Europe.
The project, called OLED100.eu, has received €12.5million from the European Community’s Seventh Framework Programme to form the technological basis for efficient OLED applications for the general lighting industry in Europe.
OLED100.eu follows OLLA, the Organic LEDs for Lighting Applications programme, which concluded earlier this year. OLLA developed white OLEDs with efficiencies of 50.7lm/W at an initial brightness of 1000cd/m2 and with lifetimes in excess of 10,000 hours.
OLED100.eu will have five main goals: high power efficiency, long lifetime, large area, low cost, and measurement standardisation/application research
According to Dr Stefan Grabowski of Philips Research and OLED100.eu’s project manager: “The European Council has agreed to cut at least 20% in CO2 emissions by 2020 and OLED100.eu is an important initiative to advance the development of energy efficient lighting solutions. Building on the success of OLLA, OLED100.eu will deliver OLEDs with twice the efficiency, ten times the operational lifetime and ten times the substrate size. The participation of leading lighting manufacturers like Philips and Osram ensures a rapid transfer of any result into real products.”
