ASIC ascendancy?

Conventional wisdom has it that the asic is now the preserve of a few well heeled consumer electronics companies, particularly with the move to ever smaller process geometries.
There are a number of reasons for this, including the increasing mask cost and minimum order quantities. But another reason why many companies avoid asics as far as possible is the dreaded respin – where the design doesn’t work as planned and has to be done again – which can increase costs dramatically whilst delaying the project substantially.
