As data rates move to 10Gbit/s and beyond, intersymbol interference (ISI) becomes a more significant problem. At these rates, ISI can cause complete eye closure within a few inches of printed circuit board trace or a few feet of copper cable. Complicating the problem, ISI can change over time and with temperature, bending and vibration.
The time varying nature of ISI means effective solutions need to adapt constantly to changing channel characteristics. Because ISI is a linear effect, it can be mitigated by applying a filter to flatten the frequency response of the channel. This process, known as equalisation, can be applied at either the transmitter or receiver.
