Designs on the future 21/07/2008
 
ESL (electronic system level) technologies, 'Core's Law', register transfer level (RTL) simulation It’s appropriate that, in this 40th anniversary issue of New Electronics, I should make some long range – maybe even 40 year – predictions about the eda sector.
Firstly, I expect that in ten years, ESL (electronic system level) technologies will be mainstream and the 15nm and 11nm designs will be verified largely at a transaction level. Design software to do this will become increasingly effective at using multicore processors and ‘Core’s Law’, so the ability to double the number of cores on a leading edge chip every 18 months will have increased our options dramatically. Increasing the number and power of cores on a chip will mean increased computational power, with a positive impact on design flexibility, versatility and reprogrammability so that chips will be able to respond dynamically and reconfigure themselves.
