Finders of the lost RF 03/07/2008

digital rf, communications test , benchtop instruments, Handheld instruments, swept spectrum analysis, vector signal analysis, FFT/wide bandwidth Just like the treasure seeking adventure hero Indiana Jones, communications test engineers are constantly analysing their spectrum in their search for the Holy Grail of interference free communications. To meet this demand and solve the problems created by digital rf technologies, test and measurement providers are cracking the bullwhip by offering portable solutions with benchtop like performance.
The rapid expansion of digital rf applications has created a complex technology environment that has driven the measurement needs of many applications – including mobile communications and spectrum management – beyond the capabilities of swept spectrum and vector signal analysis.
Digital rf signals carry complex modulation information and change from one instant to the next, hopping frequencies, spiking briefly and then disappearing. Whilst these transient and time varying transmission techniques help rf devices to avoid interference and maximise peak power, they often make them harder to detect. Finding and locating rf interference can be a challenging process!
