FPGA opens the way 20/06/2008
 
microcontrollers, FPGAs, industrial reference designs, motion control systems, obsolescence Ask a representative cross section of electronics designers which component they associate most closely with products intended for use in the industrial sector and they will reply – probably unanimously – ‘the microcontroller’.
The device is indeed regarded as the workhorse of industrial electronics and ships in huge quantities – literally billions a year. Yet, despite this statistic, two electronics distributors have developed fpga based reference designs for industrial applications.
For its part, Arrow has announced an fpga based development platform which it believes will ‘dramatically’ speed the design, prototyping and testing of motor control applications.
Called MotionFire, the platform has been created by Arrow’s European reference board team, in conjunction with key suppliers and partners. According to the company, MotionFire provides all of the hardware, software and documentation needed to rapidly and cost effectively implement motion control systems.
One of the challenges when developing motion control systems is the range of motors which can be specified. To overcome this problem, Arrow has taken the fpga route.
