The South West of England has long been one of the more active areas in the UK’s electronics industry. There are a number of reasons for this, but one of the main ones is its heritage – companies such as Inmos and GEC Plessey Semiconductor have left a lasting impression on the region.
But another reason for the high level of activity in the South West – particularly amongst start ups – is the level of support available through organisations such as Silicon South West (SSW).
Last year, SSW launched a programme called FASTtrack to provide support to early stage technology companies. The pilot scheme, supports by UK Trade and Investment and by the South West Regional Development Agency, has provided mentoring and networking tailored specifically to the needs of companies with high growth potential, as well as introducing them to prospective customers at the earliest opportunity. Simon Bond is a director of SSW as well as director of the University of Bath’s Innovation Centres. He said: “The South West’s capabilities in electronics design are recognised internationally and a growing number of the world’s leading companies have a presence in this region because of this. The aim of SSW’s networking events is to encourage the cluster to grow by providing the opportunity to share knowledge, expertise and contacts with the start ups that will be the leading companies of the future.”
