Solid state lighting (SSL) has been reaching into new applications for many years, venturing beyond LEDs as more and more general lighting manufacturers recognise the important role of suppliers of optics, power ics and passives. This is due mainly to increases in light output per die achieved by power LED manufacturers and the consequent cost/performance improvements.
However, the march of the power LED into applications previously dominated by incandescent light sources will require technical improvements at the system level, as well as in the power LEDs themselves, if SSL is to realise its potential.
